6. Best laser engraver for metal: What actually works?

In practice, after inspecting hundreds of machines, the wavelength matters more than raw power—especially for metal. A CO2 laser won't mark bare metal directly. You need a fiber laser, and if you want dark or colored marks on stainless steel or aluminum, you need a MOPA fiber laser. I've seen 20W fiber lasers outwork 40W CO2 machines on metal jobs because they use the right wavelength and pulse width for the material. (This was as true in 2024 as it is now.) The "best" machine for metal depends on the metal itself and how deep you need to go. A 20W MOPA covers most shop tasks. A 30W or 50W marks faster and allows deeper engraving.
