Laser Quality Checklist: 7 Things to Verify Before You Rent or Buy

I'm a quality/compliance manager at Candela-Laser, a manufacturer that builds both medical aesthetic and industrial systems. I've been doing this since 2022. Every week I sign off on 15 to 20 lasers before they go out, and in Q1 2024 I rejected about 11% of first deliveries. Most issues weren't catastrophic—they were avoidable: missing paperwork, misaligned optics, and specs that didn't match the actual application.

This checklist is for anyone about to rent or buy a laser. Maybe you're comparing fiber laser vs co2 laser for aluminium laser cutting. Maybe you're evaluating a Candela Max Pro laser for a med spa. Or maybe you want to start producing laser engraved Yeti cups. The machines are different, but the verification process is similar. Here are seven steps. Step five is the one most people skip.

1. Define the application before you compare lasers

Don't start with the machine. Start with the material and the mark you need. For aluminium laser cutting, a fiber laser usually beats CO2 because its wavelength is absorbed better by reflective metals. CO2 lasers emit around 10.6 micrometers; fiber lasers emit around 1.06 micrometers. The shorter wavelength is absorbed better by metals, which is why fiber is often the default for aluminium laser cutting. CO2 is still strong for wood, acrylic, leather, and coated metals. Neither is best in a vacuum.

For coated steel tumblers like Yeti, a CO2 laser removes the powder coat cleanly. If you need to mark bare stainless steel, a fiber or MOPA fiber laser is the better tool. And if you're looking at a Candela Max Pro laser, the application is clinical, so your first check is FDA clearance and intended use, not wattage alone.

Tip: Write one sentence: 'I need to [cut/mark/remove] [material] and meet [standard].' Compare lasers against that sentence, not against each other.

2. Verify actual output, not just peak power

Spec sheets list peak power. That's not the same as usable power. I've measured a 40W laser that delivered barely 28W at the work surface because of dirty delivery optics. For aluminium cutting, average power and beam quality determine cut speed and edge quality. For a Candela Max Pro laser, the issue is fluence and spot size. Ask for a recent power log.

If the seller or rental company can't provide one, that's a red flag. At least, that's been my experience over more than 200 laser audits. (Should mention: this applies to new and used systems.)

3. Confirm duty cycle and cooling for your production volume

A laser can have great peak power but only run a 20% duty cycle. For high-volume laser engraved Yeti cups, that means stopping after every few cups. For industrial aluminium laser cutting, an undersized chiller will shut you down mid-production. Check the duty cycle in the manual and ask about coolant, compressed air, and fume extraction. Rental quotes often exclude those items.

If you're selling engraved cups, shipping is another hidden cost. According to USPS (usps.com), as of January 2025, a First-Class Mail letter starts at $0.73, but a Yeti cup is a parcel, not a letter. Verify current USPS parcel rates at usps.com/stamps before you quote a price.

4. For medical lasers, check the certification trail

This is where the decision to rent a candela laser machine often goes wrong. If you're renting a Candela Max Pro laser, verify the serial number on the unit matches the certificate and the FDA 510(k) or registration documentation. Grey-market machines exist, and they're common in laser rentals. In March 2023, one rental we reviewed arrived without its calibration certificate. The clinic had seven treatment slots booked. After that vendor failure, I changed how I think about backup planning. No certification, no first treatment.

Per FTC advertising guidelines (ftc.gov/business-guidance/advertising-marketing), laser claims have to be truthful and substantiated. Don't put 'permanent hair removal' on your website unless evidence supports it. Misleading claims are a compliance issue, not just a marketing one.

5. Inspect the beam path and service record (the step most people skip)

The power log tells you the laser can fire. The service record tells you if the optics are aligned and the resonator was maintained. If a rental laser has been bumped, mirrors can shift while the cabinet still passes an electrical test. You get a warm beam, but it's not round, and the mark quality degrades. That's the scenario that costs a $22,000 redo. Ask for the maintenance log, not just 'it works.'

If I'm buying used, I want copies of the last two service reports. If I'm renting, I want a written statement of who services the unit and how long a repair takes. I want to say 30% of rental problems are service-log issues, not component failures, but don't quote me on that exact number.

6. Run a material test on your exact substrate

Before any purchase or rental, get a test run. For aluminium laser cutting, send them your actual alloy and thickness, not a generic sample. For Yeti cups, run the actual tumbler with the coating you'll use. In Q2 2024 I ran a blind test with the same engraving design on two lasers. 84% of the testers identified the one with a clean beam profile as more professional without knowing which was which. The cost difference was zero. On a 5,000-cup run, that's the difference between repeat orders and returns.

For a medical laser, the material test equivalent is a written treatment protocol and a supervised trial under your state's regulations. You can't test on paying clients.

7. Budget for the whole timeline, including delivery certainty

This is where the time-certainty premium matters. In March 2024, we paid $400 extra for expedited delivery on a rented laser because the alternative was missing a $15,000 event. That $400 bought certainty. If a vendor says 'probably on time,' assume it won't be. The lowest quote is expensive if the machine arrives late or the chiller doesn't match the machine.

For a Candela Max Pro rental, ask up front: what happens if the unit breaks on day two? Is there a loaner? Is the replacement shipped overnight, or within five to seven business days? In a booked clinic, a week of downtime is a week of revenue you can't get back. An unreliable discount is more expensive than a reliable price.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Don't assume 'laser power' means the same thing across brands. Ask for power at the work surface and pulse-to-pulse stability.
  • Don't forget consumables: focus lenses, nozzle tips, protective windows, cooling water, and fume extraction.
  • Don't compare only maximum speed. Compare cycle time for your actual part.
  • Don't ask for 'the best laser' without defining best. Best for what material, what schedule, and what certification?

Final note

There's something satisfying about a perfectly executed laser install. After all the spec checks, test runs, and paperwork, seeing a machine produce clean cuts or consistent marks is the payoff. The extra 48 hours of verification before you commit will save a month of headaches later.
