In March 2024, at 2:47 PM on a Thursday, I got a voicemail that began with: "I need a laser engraver/cutter that can do stainless steel. Today. Please call me back."
I work for Candela Laser (candela-laser.com), a distributor that sells both industrial laser engravers and cutters and medical aesthetic lasers. My job is handling the requests that can't wait. But that job also reminded me that "small" doesn't mean "unimportant." Paul's shop was three people. His order wasn't huge. The vendors who treated his project seriously are the ones he'll call next month, next year, for a much bigger order. Small means potential, not weakness.

So if you're a small shop with a rush order, don't apologize for being small. Ask uncomfortable questions. Get the machine spec in writing. And choose a supplier who treats your 3 AM panic like it's the most important job they'll do that week. Because you're probably not buying a laser. You're buying time.
