What Can You Make with a Laser Cutter? The Wrong First Question

I think most laser purchases start with the wrong question.

People ask, “What can you make with a laser cutter?” before they ask, “What will this machine actually cost me after installation, training, consumables, and downtime?” That’s backwards. A capability list can get you excited, but it can’t tell you whether the machine will earn its keep.

I’m a procurement manager at a 32-person medical device manufacturer. I’ve managed our capital equipment budget for the past 8 years—roughly $1.15M annually—and I’ve negotiated with 40+ laser vendors. Before that, I spent 5 years in medical aesthetics procurement, where I first evaluated the Candela Sirius laser.

Here’s a detail that confuses buyers: the same name appears in different categories. Search “candela-laser” with a hyphen and you’ll see medical systems, industrial marking machines, and distributor listings. In Spanish-language RFQs, it’s often written as “maquina candela laser”. The right question is not “What can you make with a laser cutter?” but “Which jobs will this machine do repeatedly, and at what cost per good part?”

What Can You Make with a Laser Cutter?

The short answer: a lot. You can laser cut stuff like acrylic signs, gaskets, stencils, thin wood, leather, fabric, and certain plastics. With a fiber laser or a CNC laser engraver for metal, you can also mark and cut steel, aluminum, and brass. That’s genuinely impressive. It’s still not the right question.

The right question is: what repeatable jobs will this machine do, at what cost per good part, over what payback period?

Capability Lists Are Not Business Cases

Early in my manufacturing job, I pushed for a “flexible” CO2 laser cutter. The idea was simple: we’d use it for whatever came in the door. In the first year, that was true. By year three, 90% of its runtime was the same six products. The flexibility was nice, but the business case was built on six products. I should have started with those six.

That’s why I get cautious when someone asks what they can make with a laser cutter. It’s a fun question, but it doesn’t produce a budget. A machine that can do 50 things is still a machine that needs to do one profitable thing repeatedly.

Why a Cheaper Quote Can Cost More

When we compared the Candela Sirius laser to a lower-priced alternative, the headline price difference was about $17,000. When I first started evaluating laser equipment, I assumed the lower quote was the better decision. Three budget overruns later—or rather, four, if you count the spare parts we didn’t anticipate—I stopped trusting headlines.

A clinic partner once sent me a request with the subject line “cotización maquina candela laser”. That was the whole message. No application details, no patient volume, no service expectations. If I’d replied with a price list, I would have done them a disservice.

In medical aesthetics, a laser is a regulated device. The Candela Sirius laser, for example, needs regional clearance, proper training, and local support. A gray-market unit can look like the same machine in a brochure and become a serious hidden cost when the calibration drifts. My rule: don’t quote a medical laser without asking about regulatory status, training, and service response time.

I still kick myself for a related mistake: not including test materials in the original budget for our CNC laser engraver for metal. We spent about $4,000 on brass, steel, and aluminum samples in the first month. It was necessary, but it wasn’t in the plan.

But What If You’re Just Starting?

I can hear the objection: “That’s fine for a big manufacturer. I’m just trying to make money with a small laser.”

The percentage changes, but the discipline doesn’t. A $6,000 CNC laser engraver for metal can quietly become a $9,000 project when you add a rotary axis, ventilation, and the days you lose learning the software. In one of our earlier purchases, the extraction and compressed air setup alone added $2,800. I didn’t include it in the first request. (I should add: we later used that setup for three machines, so the real cost per machine was lower. But I didn’t know that at the time.)

Per FTC guidance, product claims need substantiation. When a vendor tells me a laser “never needs maintenance,” I ask for it in writing and ask for service records. That’s not being difficult. It’s being realistic.

When I’d Recommend—and When I Wouldn’t

That’s also why I avoid saying “this is the best laser.” I recommend the Candela Sirius laser for clinics with steady treatment volume and a support network. If you’re a low-volume clinic, the fixed service commitment might hurt more than it helps. I recommend a CNC laser engraver for metal for shops with repeat metal-marking work. If you mostly cut wood, buy a CO2 machine. No single laser fits everyone.

So, what can you make with a laser cutter? A lot. But if you start with that question, you’re starting in the wrong place. Start with the cost per good part, and the right machine becomes obvious.
